Teething is one of your baby’s first milestones. Granted it can take a while after she starts teething for those first teeth to make their appearance, months in fact. It is also one of the most challenging milestones to deal with. For some babies teeth come in with out too much discomfort, while for others it is painful and hard for you as a parent to deal with. Teethers can help with your baby’s day time discomfort. A teether is a toy that is given to babies, so they can gnaw on it and it will help soothe their sore gums during the teething process. There are many different types of teething toys.

A teether pacifier is shaped like a pacifier. However the “nipple” is textured, so when your baby chews on it, it feels a little bit different. A great option is the RazBaby silicon hands free teether. They come in bright fun colors and are easy for baby to use. while hard to find some of them contain water or gel inside the nipple and can be placed in the refrigerator or freezer.

Wooden teethers are a great alternative to the plastic. It is very easy to find ones that are natural or organic. Meaning they are made with out the use of pesticides or chemicals that can be harmful to your baby. There is absolutly no chance of them containing BPA. They come in fun shapes and colors. The Sevi teething ring and rattle combo is a great option.

Plastic teethers are hard and can be in many fun shapes, sizes and colors. When buying a plastic teether make sure to read the label carefully to ensure that the plastic contains no BPA. If the teether is BPA free it should say so in large letters. BPA can be very harmful for your child. Green sprouts makes great teethers that are fun and also safe for your baby.

Cooling teethers are teethers that can be placed in the refrigerator and cooled. The cold will feel great on your baby’s aching gums. The cold has a natural numbing effect . They are filled with water or gel and are made with a soft plastic.

Frozen teethers hold the cold longer than the cooling teethers, because well they are frozen. Some freezable teethers are made with cloth and you can soak them in water and place them in the freezer. Others are made of soft plastic and filled with a freezable gel that stays soft even when frozen. However, be careful when buying a frozen or cooling teether. Sometimes if it is chewed on too hard the plastic can break and the filling inside the plastic can be harmful to your baby.

If you can’t afford to go buy teething toys a great substitute are washcloths rinsed with chamomile tea then frozen. The nice thing about chamomile tea is it can help reduce the inflammation of your baby’s gums and help calm any nausea they may be experiencing due to the stress of teething. Chamomile is known for it’s calming effects and is perfectly safe for your baby.

Teething does not always have to be the difficult challenge that people make it out to be for you or your baby. Teething toys are a great alternative to chemical painkillers like Orajel or Tylenol. They come in different colors and textures, and some of them are filled with a fluid or gel that can be refrigerated or frozen. A lot of times if you give your baby a teether before you give them Tylenol you will find them perfectly content with the teether. It can help comfort your baby by causing a distraction from the pain and also when they gnaw on it the opposite pressure can help relieve the pain.
